Common questions, clear answers.

Honest answers to the questions Northern NJ homeowners ask most. Don't see yours? Call us — we love a good question.

Service & Diagnostics

What happens when you call us out.

How quickly can a technician get to my house?
Most non-emergency service appointments are scheduled within 24–48 hours. For loss-of-heat or loss-of-cooling situations, we typically dispatch the same day — often within a few hours. Call (973) 386-1606 and tell us what's going on; we'll triage the urgency on the phone.
Will I get a real diagnosis or just a parts swap?
Real diagnosis. Every Volpe technician is trained to use measurement-based diagnostics — airflow, static pressure, temperature splits, combustion analysis — to identify the actual root cause before recommending parts. We don't shotgun parts at problems; we measure, then fix.
Do you charge a service / diagnostic fee?
Yes — a flat diagnostic fee covers the technician's drive, time on-site, and the measurement-based assessment of your system. The fee is disclosed before we dispatch and is applied toward the cost of any repair we perform that visit.
What happens after the diagnosis?
We give you a written, itemized estimate before any work starts. You decide whether to proceed today or schedule for later. There's never any pressure, and we don't perform repairs without your explicit approval.
Do you service oil, gas, boilers, heat pumps, and mini-splits?
Yes — all of the above, including ductless and ducted heat pumps, gas and oil furnaces, hydronic boilers, central AC, and high-efficiency variable-speed systems. Our shop also fabricates custom sheet metal for transitions and plenums.

Pricing & Estimates

How we quote, charge, and get paid.

Are estimates for new installations free?
Yes. Replacement-system estimates and Manual J load-calculation walk-throughs are free. Rick or a senior installer will visit, measure your home, count vents, and price multiple equipment options so you can compare apples to apples.
Flat-rate or hourly pricing?
Repairs are flat-rate — you know the price before we start. Custom installations and sheet-metal fabrication are quoted as fixed-price jobs. We don't run the clock; you'll never be surprised by an hourly bill.
Will the price change once you start the work?
Only if scope changes — e.g., we open a wall and discover an unrelated issue you'd like us to address. In that case we stop, explain, and give you a new written estimate before continuing. The original quote stands for the original scope.
Do you accept credit cards, financing, or rebate assignments?
We accept all major credit cards, ACH, and checks. We also offer financing through partner lenders with quick approval and competitive rates — see our Financing page for details. NJ utility rebates can usually be assigned directly to us so you don't have to front the money.

Maintenance & Plans

Tune-ups, plans, and what they cover.

What's included in your maintenance plan?
Two visits per year (spring AC tune-up + fall heating tune-up), priority scheduling, a 15% discount on any repairs, no overtime fees on emergencies, and a complete measurement-based system check — not just a hose-down and a clipboard. You also get a written report after each visit.
How often should I tune up my AC and furnace?
Once a year for each — AC in spring, heating in fall. Annual tune-ups catch small problems before they cause failures, keep efficiency high (lower bills), and are required by most manufacturers to keep parts warranties valid.
Will skipping tune-ups void my warranty?
It can. Most major manufacturers (Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Mitsubishi) require documented annual maintenance to honor parts warranties. Our maintenance plan automatically generates the paper trail your warranty needs.
Does the plan include filters?
Standard 1-inch filters are included on each visit. Higher-MERV media filters and HEPA cabinets are available at plan-member pricing if you'd like an upgrade.

Equipment, Brands & Warranties

What we install and how long it lasts.

What brands do you install and service?
We install Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Mitsubishi (mini-split & ducted), Bosch, and Navien — chosen for reliability, parts availability, and Northern NJ climate fit. We service every major brand on the market regardless of who installed it originally.
How long does a new system last?
A properly sized and installed AC system runs 12–15 years; a furnace 18–25 years; a heat pump 15–20 years. Lifespan depends almost entirely on installation quality and annual maintenance — both of which we guarantee.
Do you offer extended warranties?
Yes. Most new equipment ships with a 10-year parts warranty when registered (we register it for you). Extended labor coverage is available at the time of purchase to match the parts term, so you're fully covered for a decade.
What if my system was installed by another contractor?
No problem — we service everything. We'll honor the manufacturer's parts warranty (it follows the equipment, not the installer) and can take over annual maintenance to keep that warranty valid.

Service Areas, Hours & Emergencies

Where we go and when.

What towns do you serve?
East Hanover (HQ) plus Livingston, Morristown, Summit, West Orange, Madison, Millburn, Denville, Parsippany, Montville, Boonton, Mountain Lakes, Chester, Mendham, Mt. Olive, and surrounding Morris, Essex, and Union county neighborhoods. Not sure if we cover yours? Call and ask.
Are you available evenings, weekends, or Sundays?
Standard office hours are Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–4:00 PM. Weekends are reserved for true emergencies (no heat in winter, no cooling in extreme heat) — call our main line; after-hours calls are answered immediately and escalated to the on-call technician, never sent to voicemail.
What counts as an HVAC emergency?
Total loss of heat in winter, total loss of cooling in extreme heat, suspected carbon monoxide, a furnace short-cycling or banging, a major refrigerant leak, or a flooding condensate situation. When in doubt, call — we'll help you decide whether it can wait.
Will I pay a premium for after-hours service?
There's a modest after-hours dispatch fee outside business hours, fully disclosed before we send a technician. Maintenance plan members pay no overtime fees on emergencies — one of the plan's most-used benefits.

Energy, Rebates & Financing

Programs, savings, and payment options.

Do you participate in NJ utility rebate programs?
Yes — we're a participating contractor in the NJ Natural Gas SAVE GREEN Project and Elizabethtown Gas energy-efficiency programs. We also work with PSE&G's residential rebate offerings. We handle the paperwork; you collect the savings.
Can you help me apply for rebates?
We file for you whenever the program allows it. For programs that require homeowner submission, we provide all the supporting documentation (AHRI certificates, equipment serial numbers, install date, invoice) so the form takes minutes to complete.
Do you offer financing with monthly payments?
Yes — multiple programs ranging from 0% intro APR to longer-term low-monthly options through our partner lenders. Approval is usually 60 seconds online. See the Financing page for current lender programs and a sample monthly payment.
What ENERGY STAR equipment do you carry?
Most of what we install qualifies for ENERGY STAR — variable-speed heat pumps, two-stage and modulating furnaces, and high-SEER central AC. ENERGY STAR equipment unlocks the largest utility rebates and the federal Inflation Reduction Act tax credits.
