NCI Performance Testing: HVAC by measurement, not opinion.

The only Northern New Jersey HVAC company that measures static pressure, airflow, temperature split, and combustion before we recommend anything. You get a written System Operation Report — every time.

What we measure

Five readings that change the conversation.

NCI-certified technicians use calibrated instruments — manifold gauges, anemometers, combustion analyzers, thermal cameras — to read what your system is actually doing.

What to expect: static pressure and airflow are tested and reviewed on every audit. Depending on the size and accessibility of your equipment, testing may be limited — we'll let you know up front.

  1. Static pressure

Measured in inches of water column at the supply and return plenums. Abnormal static pressure predicts equipment failure long before the equipment quits. Most homes are 50%+ above the equipment's design max.

  2. Airflow (CFM)

Verified at each room register with a calibrated anemometer hood. The target is set by Manual J load + Manual D duct design; the reality is what we measure.

  3. Temperature split

Difference between supply and return air. Should be 18–22°F on cooling, 40–70°F on heating. Outside that range, something is wrong — and an NCI report tells you what.

  4. Combustion analysis

For gas-fired equipment, we measure CO, O₂, and stack temperature with a combustion analyzer. Reveals incomplete combustion that wastes fuel and produces carbon monoxide.

  5. Written System Operation Report

Everything we measure gets documented. You leave with a real engineering document — not a sales pitch. Use it to compare contractors or keep tabs on your system over time.

Why measurement matters

Four reasons NCI changes outcomes.

Most quotes are wrong before the contractor leaves the truck.

When a contractor quotes equipment by square footage or eyeballs the old nameplate, they oversize 50% of the time — and the new system performs worse than the old one. NCI measurement is how you fix that.

The 'comfort issue' is usually a measurable problem.

Hot rooms, humidity, weak airflow, short cycling — these aren't equipment failures. They're symptoms of a measurable design or installation problem. NCI testing finds the root cause.

Your energy bill is the trailing indicator.

Inefficient systems cost more than the bill — they shorten equipment life, age components prematurely, and damage indoor humidity. NCI catches efficiency loss before the equipment quits.

Insurance + warranty depend on documentation.

When a system fails under warranty, manufacturers want documentation that the system was operating within spec. NCI System Operation Reports provide that paper trail.

Common questions

People also ask…

Is the NCI Performance Audit really free?+
Yes. No charge for the visit, the measurements, or the System Operation Report. We make our money on the work that follows — and we'd rather you do the work with us because the data convinced you, not because we sold you.
How long does the audit take?+
Typically 60 to 90 minutes for a single-family residential system. Commercial RTUs and multi-system properties take longer. We schedule for what your system actually needs.
What should I expect during the audit?+
Static pressure and airflow are tested and reviewed — those two readings are the core of the audit — along with temperature split and, on gas-fired equipment, combustion. One honest caveat: depending on the size and accessibility of your equipment, we may be limited in how much testing we can perform. If that's the case, we'll tell you up front and document what we could measure.
What if you find a problem?+
You see the data first. We explain what we found, what it means, what we'd recommend, and what it would cost. You decide what to do next — including doing nothing at all.
Do you do this for commercial property managers too?+
Yes. Commercial NCI audits are the foundation of our Priority Partner program — we use the same measurement protocol, scaled across multi-unit portfolios.
